22 Groundhog Preference

As you may know: According to American folklore if the groundhog sees his shadow on the morning of February 2 (Groundhog Day), there will be six more weeks of winter. Punxatawney Phil is the famous groundhog that lives in Punxatawney, Pennsylvania and is often seen on national television news coverage of Groundhog Day. Now suppose that on February 2 it is clear and bright in Punxatawney but cloudy in your hometown. Punxatawney Phil sees his shadow, but the local groundhogs do not. If you believed in the Groundhog Day story and you wanted to know when Spring would be coming to your hometown, which Groundhog ought you to rely upon? (N = 1,000)

42 Survey Details

The AAPOR 2023 Omnibus Survey is composed of questions submitted by attendees of the 2023 American Association for Public Opinion Research Conference in Philadelphia, PA. Verasight collected data for this project from May 16-17, 2023. The sample consists of 1,000 United States adults. Questionnaire text and survey wave designations can be found in the accompanying codebook for this project.

All respondents were recruited from the Verasight Community, composed of individuals recruited via both address-based probability sampling and online advertisements. The data are weighted to match the April 2023 Current Population Survey on age, race/ethnicity, sex, income, education, region, and metropolitan status, as well as to population benchmarks of partisanship and 2020 presidential vote. The margin of error, which incorporates the design effect due to weighting, is +/- 3.3%.

To ensure data quality, the Verasight data team implemented a number of quality assurance procedures. Standard Verasight procedures include ensuring no responses correspond to foreign IP addresses, removing potential duplicate respondents, verifying the absence of non-human responses, and removing any respondents failing attention and/or straight-lining checks. “Speeding” respondents, defined as those completing either wave in less than 40% of the median time, were also removed.
